Vishu is a new year Malayalam festival celebrated in the state of Kerala, India. Date of Vishu is generally 14 April as per Gregorian calendar. As per Indian astrology, on this day Sun eneters into the Mesha Raasi which is first zodiac sign.
Vishu festival is celebrated in almost all the places in India by the Hindus by the different names.
Other parts of India celebrates this New Year Festival as Nau Roz (Kashmir), Cheti Chand (Sindhi),Bai sakhi (Punjab), Naba Barsha (Bengal), Goru Bihu (Assam), Puthandu (Tamil Nadu), Bisu (Tulu Nadu region inKarnataka), Vishuva Sankranti (in Orissa).
What is Vishu Kani?
Vishu Kani is the most important event of Vishu festival which consists of “seeing the first thing on the Vishu day by post waking up”. The Vishu Kani consist of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles in a bell metal vessel called uruli in the puja room of the house. Articles like raw rice, fresh lemon, cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut,metal mirror, the yellow flower konna, a holy text and coins.
All this arrangement have to complete in the previous night of Vishu. On the day of Vishu, custom is towake up at dawn and go to the puja room with the closed eyes and have a first sight of the Vishukkani of the new season.
People wear new clothes for the Vishu Festival and elders of the family distribute tokens of money, called Vishukkaineetam, to children, servants and tenants. Vishu is celebrated in all the parts of Kerala joyfully. Small childrens burst crackers on this day. Too many dishes are made on the Vishu festival.
