Sankranti 2011 is one of the important festival of Hidu Indians. It is celebrated in all the states of India. This year Sankranti 2011 is going to celebrate on 15th January.

On Makar Sankranti sun moves from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn.

It is said in Puranas, that on this day Sun visits the house of his son Shani (Saturn), who is the lord of the Makar rashi(Zodiac Capricorn). This day conveys importance of the father and son relationship. Sankranti marks the termination of winter season and beginning of a spring season.

Usually movement of the earth from one zodiac sign into another is called Sankranti and as the Sun moves into the Makara Rashi(Capricorn zodiac), it is named as Makar Sankranti. Every year on the day 14th January this festival is celebrated by Hindu’s in India. But Makar Sankranti 2011 will be calebrated on 15th January.

Like every year, on Sankranti 2011 people will exchange colourful tilguls and til-laddus in Maharashtra. Tilgul is speciality of this festival which is made from til (sesame seeds) and sugar. People gives tilgul to each other by saying “til-gul ghya, god god bola”. It means “accept these tilguls and speak sweet words”.

During this festival Maharashtrian married women invites their married women friends for “Haldi-Kunku”. Most of them wear black sarees or black dress and gives some gifts to invited friends. So wish you all Happy Sankranti 2011.
