Pongal is one of the most popular festival of South India, mainly Tamil Nadu. Pongal falls in the mid-January every year and marks the beginning of Uttarayan – sun’s journey northwards. It means on Pongal sun moves from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn. Pongal coincides with the festival Makar Sankranti celebrted throughout India. Pongal festival is celebrated for four days.

The festival usually occurs from January 13 — 15 in every year. It is observed in the Tamil month, Thai Masam. Pongal 2011 will starts on January 14 with Bhogi Pongal. Pongal is traditionally intended to thank the Sun God and the nature.

Surya Pongal 2011 – January 15
Mattu Pongal 2011 – January 16
Kaanum Pongal 2011 – January 17

Festival celebrations include drawing of Kolam & cooking of delicious Pongal. In Tamilnadu, the ritual bath (Sankramana Snana) is done in the banks of holy rivers like Kaveri, Pampa and Vaigai, when sun enters intoMakar Rashi. This movement is called as Sankramana.
